Presented to ER with twisted knee. Incidental finding on X-ray

Patient Data

Age: 55 years
Gender: Male
x-ray

 There is an area of faint curvilinear calcification over the superior aspect of  
 the popliteal fossa on the lateral view measuring up to 23 mm AP diameter, not  
 seen previously. The appearance is suspicious for a popliteal artery aneurysm.

ultrasound

 Ultrasound examination of the popliteal fossa confirms the presence of a  
 popliteal artery aneurysm with a maximum transverse diameter of 23 mm.

ct

There is a 3.2 cm partially thrombosed aneurysm arising from the P2 segment  
 of the right popliteal artery. No additional aneurysms were identified. 

Case Discussion

The popliteal artery aneurysm in this case exceeds 2 cm diameter and contains significant thrombus, therefore qualifying for treatment. Options include open repair vs endovascular covered stent insertion.
