Popliteal artery entrapment syndrome

Case contributed by Mina Sameh Rizk
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Bilateral claudication

Patient Data

Age: 50 years
Gender: Male

The popliteal fossae at both sides show an anatomical muscular variant where an accessory slip of the medial head of gastrocnemius slings around the popliteal artery separating it from the vein consistent with a type III popliteal entrapment. This results in focal compression and thrombotic changes of the bilateral popliteal arteries more prominent on the left side resulting in significant stenosis.

Incidental osteoarthritic changes in both knees are noted with left knee joint effusion.

Case Discussion

A case showing typical features of popliteal artery entrapment syndrome type III.
