Portal hypertension and venous infarction

Case contributed by Dr Jeremy Jones

A 72 year old man with 2 previous abdominal surgeries presents with severe abdominal pain.

Patient Data

Age: 70
Gender: Male

Case Discussion

CT demonstrates multiple varices, cavernous transformation of the portal vein and multiple small splenic vessels rather than a single splenic vein.  Features all secondary to portal hypertension.

The cause of the abdominal pain is the infarcted loop of jejunum (proved at the subsequent surgery) - venous infarction.
