Post cholecystectomy abscess formation

Presentation

Abdominal pain and fever. History of cholecystectomy about 6 weeks ago.

Patient Data

Age: 65 years
Gender: Male

The gallbladder is not seen at the anatomical location due to prior resection.
A 135 × 85 mm irregular fluid collection with internal air bubbles is noted in the cholecystectomy site that extends into the subhepatic and peripancreatic regions, inferring abscess formation.

In addition, moderate to severe abdominopelvic free fluid is evident.

The prostate gland is enlarged.

Case Discussion

The complication rate post cholecystectomy is low, however may include hemorrhage, biloma formation, biliary obstruction, abscess and retained gallstones.
