Post-radiotherapy muscle atrophy

Case contributed by Jeremy Jones
Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Previously treated astrocytoma (radiotherapy and chemotherapy). New left sided shoulder weakness and pain.

Patient Data

Age: 14 years
Gender: Male

On the axial and coronal T1 images, the marked reduction in muscle belly volume can be clearly seen. There is limited internal fatty change within the muscle because of the degree of volume loss.

No shoulder effusion.

Case Discussion

Evidence of atrophy around the left shoulder girdle. The upper portion of the left brachial plexus was in the radiotherapy field, and therefore the most likely cause of muscle atrophy.
