Post surgical scarring

Case contributed by Dr Garth Kruger

Routine mammography. Previous bilateral breast prostheses since removed.

Patient Data

Age: 47
Gender: Female

Note the linear density deep to the breast parenchyma bilaterally. the density on the right MLO is more pronounced thasn that on the left view.

The left view also shows a typical intamammary lymphnode.

Case Discussion

The appearance is quite typical of previously removed prostheses. The amount of scarring bvaries in a single patient and between patients. The scarring may on occasion be seen with residual capsular calcifications if present.

Do not be phased by this appearance. Its is commonly seen and stays stable with follow up mammograms. The secret to the diganosis is the tech sheet showing the surgical history.
