Presentation

Finger pain for one year post injury.

Patient Data

Age: 25-30 years
Gender: Male

Soft tissue swelling centered on the fourth proximal interphalangeal joint. No soft tissue calcification.

Joint space narrowing and marginal osteophyte formation at the fourth proximal interphalangeal joint with articular surface irregularity and a small calcific fragment dorsally. 

Case Discussion

This case demonstrates the typical features of post-traumatic osteoarthritis:

  • younger patient
  • mono-articular OA - joint space narrowing, osteophytes
  • less common joint for OA
  • evidence of prior joint trauma - articular surface irregularity, likely chronic cortical avulsion fracture
