Post-traumatic soft tissue cyst - knee

Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Single episode of trauma to prepatellar region 6 weeks earlier, and referred for ultrasound of the swelling

Patient Data

Age: 45 years
Gender: Female
ultrasound

A predominently anechoic collection with well-defined thin wall is noted in prepatellar soft tissue.

Few avascular thin septa and a nodule (probably fat globule) are noted.

Patellar and quadriceps tendon are normal.

Patellar cortex is intact.

No supra or infrapatellar knee effusion.

Case Discussion

If a morphologically similar lesion presents with similar clinical history but is located over the greater trochanter of the femur, it is called a Morel Lavallée lesion.
