Posterior fossa meningioma causing tonsillar and upward herniation

Case contributed by Dr Euan Zhang

Patient Data

Age: 50 years
Gender: Female

There is a solid mass isodense to grey matter in the right anterior aspect of the posterior fossa, causing a moderate degree of mass effect. There is slight tonsillar herniation and upward herniation.

Sagittal slice shows both the tonsillar and upward herniation. Axial slice shows partial effacement of the quadrigeminal plate cistern, indicative of slight upward herniation.

Case Discussion

Example of subtle tonsillar and upward herniation due to mass effect from a posterior fossa meningioma.
