Posterior hip dislocation

Severe left hip pain after motor vehicle accident.

Patient Data

Age: 30 years old
Gender: Male

On X-ray left femoral head lies superior and lateral to the acetabulum. No pelvic fracture is seen.  


The left femoral head is posteriorly dislocated.  There is also small bone fragment within joint space represent the posterior actabular rim fracture.

Case Discussion

Posterior hip dislocations are much more common than anterior dislocation.

It most frequently occurs in the setting of significant trauma, given the large amount of force required.
