Posterior staphyloma

Presentation

Macular degeneration, myopia, vertigo.

Patient Data

Age: 80 years
Gender: Female
mri
  • both globes show asymmetric posterior bulging with irregular thinning of the sclera

  • small SWI signal void in the right thalamus representing prior microbleed

  • signs of chronic small vessel ischemia (Fazekas I)

Case Discussion

The main differential would be coloboma, but as the scleral thinning is predominantly temporal to the optic disc the findings rather represent posterior staphyloma
