An oblique VCUG image shows dilated proximal (posterior) urethra leading to abrupt narrowing, along with bladder neck hypertrophy and bladder wall trabeculations.
Case Discussion
Children with posterior urethral valves usually present with repeated urinary tract infections and dysuria. Voiding cystourethrogram is most commonly used investigation for diagnosis shows signs of dilated posterior urethra with abrupt narrowing and normal caliber anterior urethra. Other signs include urinary bladder wall irregularity, bladder neck hypertrophy and vesicoureteric reflux.
