Postpartum cerebral venous thrombosis with hemorrhagic venous infarcts

Presentation

Sudden onset of severe headaches, vomiting with altered consciousness in a patient on the postpartum 15th day.

Patient Data

Age: 25 years
Gender: Female

Thrombosis of the superior sagittal sinus and cortical veins as well as left transverse/sigmoid sinuses, which appear of high signal on T1WI and FLAIR and low signal T2WI (subacute phase) with loss of their signal void on MRV. 

Bifrontal areas of venous hemorrhagic infarcts with blooming on GE sequence.

Case Discussion

The postpartum period is the most vulnerable period for women to develop a cerebral venous thrombosis +/-  cerebral venous infarction due to the hypercoagulable state of this period.
