The thumb is duplicated from the MCP joint with duplication of the phalanges which both articulate at the MCP joint.

Pre-axial polydactyly refers to polydactyly where the additional digit is towards the first digit of the hand (radial side).
In this case the thumb is duplicated from the metacarpophalangeal joint.
