Prepatellar bursitis

Presentation

Right knee anterior swelling for the last few weeks. No trauma.

Patient Data

Age: 65 yrs
Gender: Male
x-ray

Reduction of medial and lateral femorotibial compartment space. Marginal osteophytes from the peri-articular surface of the femur, tibia, and patella. No bone lesion/ periosteal reaction.

Pre-patellar soft tissue thickening. No suprapatellar effusion. Normal density of Hoffa's fat pad.

ultrasound

A fluid collection anterior to the patella with few septa and fat nodules measuring about 40 x 40 x 15 mm. No internal vascularity. Increased peri-focal vascularity. Normal patellar anterior cortex. Normal patellar tendon. No superficial or deep intra-patellar bursitis. No suprapatellar recess effusion.

Case Discussion

Findings suggest prepatellar bursitis with changes of degenerative joint disease of the femorotibial compartment.
