Progressive pulmonary emphysema

Presentation

Known smoker with cough, shortness of breath on exertion and chest pain.

Patient Data

Age: 30 years
Gender: Male
x-ray

Increase radiolucency in the right upper lobe.

No consolidation or collapse.

Heart and pleural spaces are clear.

Follow up after 5 years

x-ray

Progressive radiolucency in both upper lobes with a paucity of pulmonary vessels.

Heart size normal.

Case Discussion

Pulmonary emphysema is strongly related with smoking.

Although the patient is a young smoker, he had progressive emphysematous changes within the lungs which were more eminent on the follow up radiograph. Smoking cessation was advised in this case.
