Proximal femoral focal deficiency

Case contributed by Dr Hani Salam

Leg length discrepancy at birth.

Patient Data

Age: Neonate
Gender: Male

First image: Note the abnormally formed right femur. The acetabulum appears unremarkable, although at this age neither femoral head can be seen.

Second images (11 weeks follow up): Femoral head cannot be seen (yet) and coxa vara deformity is present.

Case Discussion

A newborn male patient with features of right proximal focal femoral deficiency. Even at 11 weeks, the femoral head cannot be seen to be ossified, although there is the impression of cartilaginous head, and as such it is not possible to classify this deformity. See classification of PFFD
