Perforated appendix in 2009 with emergency appendicectomy. Subsequent histology showed mucinous cystadenoma. Now abdominal distension.

Patient Data

Age: 47
Gender: Male

CT scan for staging in 2012

Modality: CT

Gross mucinous material (not fluid) surrounding the liver, causing marked distortion to the hepatic contour. Note infiltration through the right hemidiaphragm (arrow) into the right hemithorax.

Original CT scan in 2009 when histological diagnosis was made

Modality: CT

Small cystic lesion consistent with mucinous tumour involving the inverted stump of the appendix post emergency appendicectomy.

Case Discussion

Pseudomyxoma peritonei that enters the pleural cavity has a much worse prognosis.
