Presentation

Productive cough with intermittent fever and chest pain. Inhalational drug abuse (not specified).

Patient Data

Age: 45 years
Gender: Male
x-ray

Cavitating lesion of the left lung apex.

Normal chest X-ray a year ago.

There is a large, cavitating cystic mass with air-fluid level in the left upper lobe surrounded by consolidated lung parenchyma. The mass shows enhancing, lobulated contours reaching the pleural surface of the lung apex.

Case Discussion

Immunocompromised patients (certain type of inhalational drug abuse may end up in immune deprivation) are more prone to develop lung abscess.
