Pulmonary embolism with Hampton hump

Case contributed by Eric F Greif

Presentation

Shortness of breath.

Patient Data

Age: Adult

Poor inspiratory radiograph.

Left pleural based basal opacification may represent atelectasis but could also represent a lung infarction in pulmonary embolism. Further CT scan assessment is required.

Wedge-shape pleural-based lesion involving the left lower lobe representing infarcted lung secondary pulmonary embolism.
Pulmonary embolism was also seen within the left pulmonary arterial system.

Case Discussion

Pulmonary embolism can be suspected on X-ray if there is associated pulmonary infarction, which appears as a wedge-shaped pleural-based opacity, referred as Hampton hump
