Pulmonary fibrosis: early

Case contributed by Dr Ian Bickle

Presentation

Progressive shortness of breath and dry cough. Fine inspiratory basal crepitations.

Patient Data

Age: 55
Gender: Male
X-ray

Increased interstitial markings in both lungs most pronounced at the bases.

The lung volumes are maintained.

Heart size normal.

Case Discussion

The appearances are those of pulmonary fibrosis.   This is relatively mild for a plain radiograph.

The degree of fibrosis if and when the patient proceeds to HRCT of the chest is often much more pronounced.
