Pulmonary hepatisation

Case contributed by Radswiki

Consolidation of the left lung with moderate patchy enhancement. Consolidation is also noted in the perihilar right lung. Moderate left sided pleural effusion. Findings are suggestive of lobar pneumonia.

Case Discussion

Hepatisation is a stage of lobar pneumonic consolidation. In the early stage there is haemorrhagic fluid within the alveoli which gets organised, resulting in a pathological appearance called "red hepatisation". Later on fibrosis occurs in the organised exudate leading to an appearance called "gray hepatisation".
