Pulmonary hydatid cyst

Case contributed by Dr Hidayatullah Hamidi

Presentation

Chronic cough.

Patient Data

Age: 15 years
Gender: Male
X-ray

Well defined homogeneous opacity in the left lung middle and lower zones.

CT

A large thick wall cystic lesion with surrounding mild atelectasis in the left lung lower lobe. No air is seen in the lesion to suggest bronchial communication.

Few enlarged left hilar lymph nodes.

A large cyst is also seen in segment 4A and 4B of liver.

Case Discussion

The imaging features in such age group in a hydatid endemic area are very likely for hydatid cysts.

Lung is the second most common site involved by hydatid cyst after liver (in current case both are involved).
