Patient Data

Massively enlarged main pulmonary artery, lungs clear.

Massively enlarged main pulmonary artery and enlarged left pulmonary artery.
Case Discussion
Patient referred for MRI after being diagnosed by echocardiography with pulmonic valve stenosis. The systolic jet of blood resulting from the stenotic valve dilates the main pulmonary artery. The left pulmonary artery arises more directly from the main pulmonary artery than the right pulmonary artery, resulting in preferential flow to the left and dilation of the left pulmonary artery. When visible radiographically, enlargement of the left pulmonary artery in pulmonic stenosis is called the Chen sign.
