Quadriceps muscles injury

Presentation

A few days prior to the presentation, the patient had blunt trauma to the left distal thigh region. Presented with complaints of local pain and swelling.

Patient Data

Age: 45 years
Gender: Male
x-ray

There is no fracture/ dislocation. There is soft tissue swelling in suprapatellar region on the lateral side.

ultrasound

There are fluid collections involving vastus lateralis muscle ( about 40 x 25 x 10 mm ) and vastus intermedius muscle ( about 35 x 20 x 9 mm ) at myotendinous junction regions due to the muscle fibers tear. However, there is no tear of the aponeurosis. Rectus femoris and vastus medialis muscles are normal. The quadriceps tendon is intact. There is no suprapatellar effusion. There is mild edema of overlying subcutaneous fat.

The asymptomatic right side shows normal muscle echopattern.
