Quadriceps tendon rupture

Presentation

Sudden onset of anterior severe pain in left knee in an amateur dancer with a history of chronic renal failure. Swelling of the knee joint and restricted extension. On palpation, a defect is found in the suprapatellar region compatible with discontinuity of the quadriceps tendon (QT).

Patient Data

Age: 60 years
Gender: Male

Left knee

Full-thickness tear of quadriceps tendon at the patellar attachment site, wavy patellar tendon, and large hematoma in suprapatellar recess and into the subcutaneous tissue, anteriorly.

Otherwise within normal limits.

Case Discussion

Spontaneous quadriceps tendon rupture are often associated with diabetes, chronic renal failure, gout, and use of quinolone antibiotics. Diagnosis of QT rupture is often delayed1.
