Radial beak

Presentation

Post fall on outstretched hand 1 day ago. Tender radial head, distal radius and snuffbox.

Patient Data

Age: 20 years
Gender: Male
x-ray

There is a small epiphyseal spur along the lateral aspect of the distal radius, representing a normal variant. Additionally the lateral cortex of the scaphoid waist demonstrates a small osseous bump, which does not have the typical appearance of a fracture.

No malalignment, fractures or dislocations identified.

Case Discussion

Classic appearance of the beak-like protrusion of an epiphyseal spur. It arises from the lateral aspect of the closed epiphysis. Normal variant which can be mistaken for fracture.  Small osseous bump seen on the lateral cortex of the scaphoid waist does not exhibit the typical appearances of fracture.
