Radial neck fracture

Case contributed by Dr Jeremy Jones

Fall onto an outstretched arm. Now painful right elbow. Can't extend fully.

Patient Data

Age: 7
Gender: Male

Frontal and lateral radiographs with a coned view of the elbow. Angulated radial neck fracture. The radiocapitellar line has been disrupted - the radial head is dislocated.

Case Discussion

In the context of a radial neck fracture in children, it is important to determine whether there has been loss of alignment of the radiocapitellar line. If there has been displacement of the radial head, it will usually need to be operatively manipulated.
