Re-perfusion syndrome

Case contributed by A.Prof Frank Gaillard

Elderly patient following carotid endarterectomy.

Case Discussion

This patient underwent a carotid endarterectomy on the right. That evening he developed left sided weakness, and a CT scan demonstrated swelling of the right hemisphere consistent with reperfusion syndrome

Over the next few days the swelling subsided as cerebral blood flow autoregulation re calibrated to the newly increased perfusion.
