Presentation
Right arm fast bowler developed left paraumbilical region pain while bowling about three weeks before the presentation.
Patient Data
At the site of pain pointed by the patient (left paraumbilical region), there is an area of blurred echopattern of the rectus abdominis muscle measuring about 13 x 8 x 7 mm. The affected area of the muscle shows thickening. There is no fluid cleft/ collection. The rest of the left rectus abdominis muscle shows normal echopattern. Contralateral right rectus abdominis muscle shows normal echopattern.
Case Discussion
A non-professional right-arm fast bowler developed sudden onset of the left paraumbilical region pain while bowling. The pain persisted with movements for three weeks and an ultrasound was advised to look for pathology. Ultrasound shows a focal area of disruption of the fibrillar pattern of the left rectus abdominis muscle favoring a sprain.
Non-dominant side rectus abdominis muscle injury is known in a few sports activities like handball, tennis, and volleyball1.
Side strain is another injury in cricket which involves the non-bowling arm side. The strain involves internal or external oblique abdominis or transversalis muscle2.
