Regional osteopaenia

Case contributed by Dr Henry Knipe

One month left wrist pain.

Patient Data

Age: 42
Gender: Female

No fracture or malalignment is identified. Mild soft tissue swelling around the wrist. Periarticular osteopaenia. No bony erosions identified.

Case Discussion

Periarticular osteopenia has a wide differential. Considerations include disuse osteopaenia, erosive arthritis and complex regional pain syndrome.

The patient stated she had been resting her hand for the past month due to pain. The cause in this case is not known but disuse osteopaenia is favoured.
