Renal abscess and desmoid tumor

Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Left loin pain, dysuria and fever of 1 week duration.

Patient Data

Age: 35 years
Gender: Female

An abscess involving the anterior cortex of left kidney with fluid and air inside and perinephric fat infiltration. Another fluid collection is seen at subcapsular area of posterior left kidney as well as the left psoas muscle (psoas abscess).

An air locule is also seen within the urinary bladder.

An incidentally discovered desmoid tumor of the right posterior thoracolumbar fascia displaying isodense texture to the adjacent muscle is shown.

Diagnosis: Left renal abscess complicated with psoas abscess and incidentally discovered thoracolumbar fascia desmoid tumor.

Case Discussion

Desmoid tumor can be accidentally discovered as in this case, which usually occurs in 20-40 years of age and more common in female. Theories claim that it is related to estrogen hormone.
