Renal cell carcinoma in a cystic kidney with ESRF: gross pathology

Case contributed by Dr Ian Bickle

Presentation

Middle aged patient with long standing ESRD. Sinister lesion on CT.

Patient Data

Age: 60 years
Gender: Female

Post operative gross specimens.

Gross specimen from a nephrectomy (CUT).

Atrophic kidneys with mulitple cysts. One cyst contains solid tissue (annotated).

This was a renal cell carcinoma.

Arrows indicate the tumour that developed within one of the cysts

Case Discussion

Even kidneys that no longer function can develop tumour within - a few renal cells remain enough to become neoplastic.

Imaging this type of patient can be a challenge given the limitations of contrast enhancement.
