Renal collecting system stone in cystinuria

Presentation

Left sided flank pain and microscopic haematuria. Usually fit and well.

Patient Data

Age: 13 years
Gender: Female
Modality: X-ray

Large calcific density projected over the left kidney consistent with a renal calculus.

Modality: Ultrasound

Single image from a renal ultrasound that confirms a renal calculus with posterior shadowing.

Modality: CT

Large collecting system stone with several smaller areas of renal calcification bilaterally.

Case Discussion

It is unusual for large stones to develop in children in the absence of an underlying condition. The child was subsequently found to have cystinuria.
