Renal hydatid cyst - pediatric

Presentation

Right flank pain.

Patient Data

Age: 10 years
Gender: Female
Ultrasound

There is a large unilocular cyst arising from the right kidney with a homogeneous content, extending to the Morison pouch. No detached membranes are seen.

CT

There is a large well-circumscribed right renal unilocular cyst measuring (12 x 7 x 6 cm) with homogeneous fluid content and high attenuation wall on non-enhanced images, extending to the Morison pouch with a mass effect on the liver which is displaced superiorly. No enhancement is seen following IV contrast. A mild dilatation with distortion of the calyces.

The chest radiograph (not shown) was unremarkable.

 

Case Discussion

Renal hydatid infectiocommonplacen is a very rare manifestation of hydatid disease, seen in less than 5% of patients with hydatid disease

The patient went on to have conservative surgical resection which confirmed the diagnosis.
