Renal laceration

Case contributed by Jeremy Jones
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Restrained child in high-speed RTC.

Patient Data

Age: 14 years
Gender: Male
ct

There is severe laceration to the left kidney with a large fluid-density collection around the kidney.

ct

After 10 minutes delay, repeat imaging of the abdomen and pelvis confirms that the left perirenal collection consists of a hematoma and urinoma with active urine-leak from the left collecting system.

Case Discussion

Severe abdominal trauma with a renal laceration that extends to the collecting system with free urine-leak. This demonstrates the importance of performing delayed imaging in patients with severe solid organ trauma or in whom there is suspicion for active hemorrhage.
