Presentation

33-week gestation neonate. Respiratory distress. Intubated.

Patient Data

Age: 1 day
Gender: Male
x-ray
  • lung volumes are mildly decreased
  • hazy lungs with symmetrical diffuse ground-glass opacities and air bronchogram
  • orogastric tube, with the tip in the stomach
  • endotracheal (ET) tube in a normal position

Case Discussion

Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) is a consequence of surfactant deficiency in premature infants. Neonatal pneumonia is the main differential diagnosis.
