Presentation

Premature baby (27 weeks, 1 day).

Patient Data

Age: 1 day
Gender: Male
x-ray

Widespread granular opacities involving bilateral lungs. Reduced lung volumes. Air bronchograms can be seen centrally. No pleural effusion.

The tip of the feeding tube projects over the stomach bubble. 

Case Discussion

Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) occurs due to insufficient production of surfactant. It is common in premature neonates. The radiographic features of RDS include low lung volumes, diffuse, bilateral and symmetrical granular opacities, and bell-shaped thorax. Air bronchograms can be seen.
