Retained cardiac pacemaker leads

Case contributed by Pir Abdul Ahad Aziz Qureshi

Evaluation of cardiac pacemaker

Patient Data

Age: 65 years
Gender: Female

Cardiac pacemaker on the left side with its wires in appropriate locations. No pneumothorax is seen. Wires of a previous cardiac pacemaker (placed on the right side) can also be seen.

Case Discussion

The patient is a known case of right breast cancer and was planned for radiotherapy. So, it was decided by the oncology board to change the side of the pacemaker. The old pacemaker was subsequently removed, but its wires were retained because significant time had elapsed, and the wires would have fibrosed, making it challenging to remove these wires.
