Retained surgical gauze - soft tissue

Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Painful swelling of the lateral aspect of the left thigh with no fever, intertrochanteric frature of the left hip treated by dynamic hip screw fixation three weeks ago.

Patient Data

Age: 70 years
Gender: Female

There is a relatively well-defined fusiform mass within the vast lateralis muscle, spontaneously hyperdense with a hypodense central area (air). No enhancement seen on postcontrast images. A deep subcutaneous hypodense collection with no peripheral enhancement is seen along the cutaneous scar (effusion of serosity).
