Retinal astrocytic hamartoma on background tuberous sclerosis

Case contributed by Dr Naushad Ali Basheer Ahamed

Presentation

Status epilepticus.

Patient Data

Age: 10
Gender: Male

The scan shows multiple bilateral calcific densities in both globes involving the retinal margins.

Case Discussion

The findings on non-contrast enhanced CT of the brain in a 10 year old male patient with a known case of tuberous sclerosis is compatible with retinal astrocytic hamartoma.

It is important to recognize these lesions. If they are viewed in unsuspected cases, a careful examination of the brain for tuberous sclerosis is mandatory, particularly if the patient has other clinical diagnositic criteria.

The differential diagnosis on CT would include retinoblastoma and they need to be differentiated.
