A premature 3 months old male child with a history of oxygen supplementation, presented with bilateral leukocoria.
Patient Data
B-scan transverse image of eyes show bilateral small eyes with swollen, cataractous lens and symmetrical heterogenous predominantly hypoechoic mass lesion with few echogenic foci- calcification in posterior segment attached anteriorly to posterior surface of lens.
Case Discussion
Retinopathy of prematurity is one of the major differential diagnosis in premature, low birth weight infants presenting with leukocoria. It is an abnormal proliferation of blood vessels within the retina which can lead to retinal detachment. The most important cause is excessive oxygen supplementation. B-scan ophthalmic ultrasound is a safe and readily available modality for its diagnosis.
