Presentation
Asymptomatic medically free young male being evaluated as a renal donor.
Patient Data
Right kidney measures 8.6 cm and left kidney measures 9.4 cm in craniocaudal dimensions. No radiopaque renal calculi, mass lesion or pelvicalyceal system abnormality is seen.
Single patent bilateral main renal arteries. No accessory or aberrant renal artery is noted. Orthogonal diameter of either renal artery is 5 mm. Distance between the right arterial origin and the first segmentary bifurcation is 2.4 cm. The first segmentary bifurcation of the right renal artery is in retro-caval region. Distance between the left arterial origin and the first segmentary bifurcation is 2.6 cm. Patent and well-opacified renal veins.
Retroaortic left renal vein draining into the IVC at the level of inferior margin of the third lumbar vertebral body. Right renal vein diameter is 6 mm and left renal vein diameter is 8 mm. Distance between the segmentary confluence of the right renal vein and the IVC is 6 mm, distance between the segmentary confluence of the left renal vein and the IVC is 8 cm and distance between the confluence of the left renal vein and the left margin of the aorta is 2.6 cm. Right renal vein has no major venous tributary. Two tributaries (adrenal and gonadal veins with gonadal vein measuring 2.5 mm) are seen related to the left renal vein. A few tiny lumbar veins are also draining in to the left renal vein.
Case Discussion
Type II retroaortic left renal vein and early segmental branching of the right renal artery; otherwise, no gross renal abnormality is seen.
