Retrograde passage of ureteric stone

Presentation

Bilateral renal stones and Right ureteric stone with obstruction. 4 week follow up. Passed stone?

Patient Data

Age: 80 years
Gender: Male

Bilateral renal stones.

Moderate right hydronephrosis due to an obstructing 6mm upper right ureteric stone. Right perinephric fat stranding.

Calcification in the head of pancreas.

The 6mm right upper ureteric has passed retrogradely back into the right mid-pole calyx. Hydronephrosis resolved.

2mm left mid-pole and three 3mm left lower pole stones.

2mm right upper pole simple renal cyst.

Calcification in the head of pancreas.

Case Discussion

 This case illustrates the retrograde passage of a ureteric stone.

I have seen this a few times now. Just because the stone isn't in the ureter anymore doesn't mean it has left the body.

This usually only happens with upper ureteric stones.
