Right hepatic vein thrombosis

Case contributed by Dr Aditya Shetty

Presentation

k/c/o renal carcinoma ; Post right sided nephrectomy on follow up

Patient Data

Age: 60
Gender: Male
Modality: Ultrasound

Serial images showing a linear echogenic area in the liver anterior to the inferior vena cava (IVC) and adjacent to the middle hepatic vein (MHV)

The linear echogenic area is along the expected course of the right hepatic vein (RHV).

On color doppler and power doppler study no flow is seen in the RHV.

The IVC , middle hepatic vein and left hepatic vein show normal colour flow.

Thus the diagnosis of right hepatic vein thrombosis was established.

The last image shows a waveform of a normal right hepatic vein.
