Right supraclavicular haematoma

Case contributed by Dr Steve Lau

Difficulty breathing and expanding neck haematoma post intracardiac electrophysiology study (EPS)

Patient Data

Age: 65
Gender: Female

CT neck

CT neck shows a large haematoma in the right supraclavicular region. The superficial component thickens the strap muscles and the right sternocleidomastoid muscle.

The deep component extends the length of the carotid sheath to the level of skull base causing displacement of right parapharyngeal fat pad, distortion of oropharynx and mild leftward trachael displacement without compression.

No active contrast extravasation.

Case Discussion

Patient's enlarging neck haematoma was associated with a haemoglobin drop of 148 to 120.
