Right side urolithiasis

Patient Data

Age: 40 years
Gender: Female

You can see a rim like enhancement at the periphery of the right hydronephrotic kidney. There are also several radio opaque stones.

Case Discussion

The findings of the intravenous urogram (IVU) are compatible with the rim sign in the right kidney due to chronic hydronephrosis.

In a patient with chronic hydronephrosis, enhancement may occur at the periphery of the residual, but markedly atrophic, renal parenchyma, surrounding the dilated calices and renal pelvis. The inner margin of this hydronephrotic rim is concave toward the renal hilum, and enhancement of the cortical columns between the dilated collecting system elements may be seen.
