Round ligament varicosities

Presentation

27 weeks pregnant patient complaining of left groin lump on and off.

Patient Data

Age: 30 years
Gender: Female
ultrasound

USG study showed anechoic tortuous tubules with a ‘bag of worms’ appearance representing a bunch of dilated veins at left inguinal region communicating with the gravid uterus.

Color Doppler showed hypervascular veins with venous pattern of flow which increases on Valsalva maneuver and reduces on supine position.

There are no associated complications.

Case Discussion

Round ligament varicosities are dilated and tortuous veins in the round ligament. These are rare, although most commonly seen during pregnancy and in the postpartum period.

They constitute an important differential diagnosis for inguinal masses in order to avoid unnecessary surgery and associated complications.
