Presentation
Cough, yellow sputum, pyrexia and left lower chest pain.
Patient Data
6cm opacification at the left hilum with air bronchograms within. It is well demarcated with irregular margins.
Follow up shows complete resolution of the previous noted left hilar opacification.
Case Discussion
Round pneumonia, if confidently diagnosed, does not require any follow up chest radiograph if symptoms have resolved on appropriate antibiotic therapy.
If a follow-up radiograph is performed, 95% of cases will have resolved at 30 days.
In this case the radiologist had some uncertainty in the diagnosis due to the more central appearances of the opacification and recommended follow up which showed complete resolution.
