Round pneumonia

Case contributed by Dr Ayaz Hidayatov

Fever and chills.

Patient Data

Age: 3 years
Gender: Male

X-ray demonstrates a well-defined right perihilar round mass-like opacity.

The stomach is dilated and filled with air, presumably due to crying.

A follow-up chest radiograph after 2 weeks of antibiotic therapy demonstrating nearly complete resolution of the right perihilar lesion.

Case Discussion

The recognition of this entity is important in that pneumonia can mimic a mass or other mass-like lesions on X-ray, especially in the pediatric population. In most cases, follow-up images are helpful.
